I watched Avatar in 3D, here is my view of it:
The effects were good up to the first half of the movie. More or less, the rest of the film had nothing more to show in this part.
The worst of all was the plot... First of all, the aliens had an extreme resemblance to the American Indians as far as ideals, spiritualism and philosophy are concerned. If you want native Americans in your films, use those instead of making lame copies of them in aliens... OR go find something really new...
Then, it's about the Hollywood stupid vision. In "The Last Samurai", an American was there to remind to the Japanese who they really were. The same stupidity was cast in numerous other movies i guess. Here, an American reminds the Aliens who they are and what the wisest thing to do is bla bla bla... He's more alien than the aliens themselves...he actually managed to ride that thingy (i can't remember the creature's name).
The outcome? A visually boring movie, terminated by an extremely poor and stupid plot... I guess Hollywood must overcome this "inferiority compunction" expressed in its films... Because in the end that's how it really seems to be...[/b] |

| Well, the second half of it was (to me), as i got used to the effects in the first half. I don't think there was anything exceptional after a point and on... |

| Let's see if the inevitable sequel manages to get past the Hollywood cliches and into new territory. Cameron reportedly had parts two and three broadly sketched out even before this one was released. |

I'd say it's a 50-50 chance.
You could really get to some great places having a clean slate that Avatar leaves with it's ending, however the rule of sequels dictates that it's not going to be even as good as the original.
I'd rather see him create something entirely new. But the sequels are coming I'm afraid whether we want them or not. |

| There are rare cases of the sequel being worthy. Aliens. Terminator 2. The Empire Strikes Back. A Shot in the Dark. |

I really liked Avatar, even the horribly cliched and recycled plot. Why? Well, because. It's rather obvious why the script didn't try anything new, the writers were counting on the familiarity to sell because it was spiced up with 3D (and blue aliens). Some points did make me cringe quite badly because of all the terrible sap they were throwing at the watchers, but what did you expect? It's basically Disney for adults.
But, I have to agree with Eagle about the visually boring part. After your eyes get used to the 3D, the movies loses quite a bit of its interest. And I'm not sure if I'll bother seeing Avatar's sequels since the first one had so little to offer plotwise
I wish the 3D craze would die down, though. The tickets are awfully expensive here and I don't see the point of having "normal" movies in 3D. |

I expect we're going to be seeing more and more movies in 3D from now on. I think the higher prices work out great for the theaters (once they buy the 3D projector equipment) and they'll all be trying to increase profits.
I think I can name more 3D movies coming out in 2010 than in 2005-2009 combined... |

| I actually didn't see this one. I will rent it when it comes out on DVD, but it seemed to me that when I asked people how they liked it, for every one person that liked or loved it, two others said it wasn't great at all...and very very long. |

From what I've seen, the people who saw it in 2D didn't like it that much and the people who saw it in 3D (generally) enjoyed it much more.
That's why I just don't think I could ever rent it or buy it. I don't want to see it in 2D, because I know that's only about 40% of the movie content. |

I think you may have a valid point. Assuming that is the case however, I wonder why anyone would create a movie like this, knowing that people can really on fully appreciate it in 3-D?
I mean the average person won't be able to see it in the years to come on their very own 3-D IMAX screen or anything. So why make a movie that really can only be fully enjoyed in the theatre. Movies only show for a few short weeks, maybe a month or two, and then it is seen on the small screen for the rest of it's existance.
Many people will be judging the movie based on renting it once it comes out. If more movies will be leaning toward using this same technology in the future, it looks to me like that would be a major hurdle to overcome. Just a thought. |

I liked it. Yes, the plot was simplistic, but I don't view that as a horrible, film-crippling aspect like some people seem to view it as. Simple stories are often the best kind.
Plus it looked amazing. I saw it in standard screen size 3D. |

I guess you'll just have to wait until Panasonic can launch their 3D televisions into the mainstream, Guy...
Hubby and I got to see it at the Panasonic pavilion at the Winter Olympics that we just hosted - and while there is lots of room for both technological & pricing improvements, there is a huge potential.
From what they were saying, we can expect to see these TVs hit the market sometime in April, but like the first plasmas that came out, the price will be prohibitive.
Give it a couple years, and we'll all be watching 3D movies at home! |

I can't wait to see it on DVD, even in "mere" 2D.
