The signing...
I came two hours early hoping to get into the queue before it goes outside the store. To my great surprise there was no queue yet. After going around the bookstore a couple of times I found a couple of people close to the spot where Martin was about to sit. They were talking SoIaF, so I kind of joined in.
About half an hour before signing that group turned out to be the beginning of the queue and when the store staff came over and asked who's first people pointed at me. And so I was the first one.
Fifteen minutes before 5 store filled with people. In 10 minutes the line went from ten people to over 50. George showed up on time escorted by store security and I think management. He asked me to give him a copy of Songs of the Dying Earth from the shelf because he wanted to say few words about it (he was promoting it there, SoIaF stuff was "by the way"). That almost gave me a heart attack.
When it was finally time to sign I came over, said few words about Fantasy Fan, gave him the book (which was met with grunts of approval from around and big thanks from George himself). He commented that he actually met Sapkowski on some event in Czech Republic. I got my books signed and gave way to the rest of fans.
I went to get something to eat and get some things done knowing it would be a while before the signing would be over. When I came back I joined another group of fans, this time with some Brotherhood members. We got the info that our pub overbooked and we had to find another place for the moot. Good thing I was around because if I went straight for the Oval I would have missed it.
The moot was a blast. I met some great folks there and listened to George talking and answering questions about SoIaF and many different things. He talked a lot about HBO production (he spoke highly of it), about his way of writing (that he's more of a gardener than architect) and some specific saga topics.
I wouldn't be able to recall most of what I heard and I'm sure there are websites that list every word George said. The things I did remember and found interesting was:
George isn't planning who's going to live or die. When he kills off a character it's the gardener in him snipping off a branch. When asked about if he knows "who's going to live in the end" he said "Valar Morghulis", all men must die. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Everyone will die and world will be reborn in some way. It's Martin, everything is possible.
Is that good enough recap Guy? |

And while we're at it, are you only Ireland's man, or do you also live in Ireland and perhaps will be present in Dublin for Martin's book signing? There will be a BWB meeting held after the signing and I have a feeling that Martin just might make appearance.
I just saw your post sorry for responding so late. I acyually live in the US alabama to be exact. My ancestors were from ireland sl alot of times I act like im 100% irish haha. I would love to visit there one day though and I def would have loved to go to the book signing. alas it wasnt so |

Yup, I have been. Myself, Cat and Gar were handing out flyers at the signing and then chatting with people at the moot. George was great to chat with! Such a gent. And no worries. There were a lot of people there. I suck with names, too. |

I'm sure we'll bump into each other on Octocon.
I'll post something about it a bit later, right now I'm eagerly looking forward to my son's birth! |
